10 “Big Data” surprising statistics and the future trends by 2025

Date:

The term “Big Data” comes from a reason, and its scale is indeed very large. However, to grasp the growth of digital information is not easy. So, in this topic let carefully put together 10 shocking facts and looked forward to future trends.

1. According to the IDC survey report, by 2025, the amount of data generated globally will increase from 33ZB in 2018 to 175ZB, with a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 26%. However, the actual stored data is only about 9ZB, compared to 0.9ZB in 2015. The analysis said that only about one-third of the stored data is used.

2. According to the Coughlin Associates survey, it is estimated that by 2020, the annual capacity of HDD hard disks, SSD hard disks, and LTO tape drives that have been sold will reach about 1,300 exabytes, and 4,500 exabytes by 2025. According to IDC’s survey data, by 2025, traditional HDD hard drives will account for more than 80% of enterprise storage needs, SSD hard drives will account for about 15%, and new NVMe-NAND solid-state devices will account for less than 5%.

3. According to Statista’s survey, HDD hard disk sales peaked in 2010, reaching 651.3 million units, and dropped to 316.3 million units in 2019. However, as storage demand increases, HDD shipments are expected to start to grow again in the next few years. Obviously, the capacity of HDD hard drives has increased substantially, enabling organizations to store more bytes on a smaller number of physical units.

4. As organizations are moving to the cloud, it is expected that data storage on end devices will drop sharply by 2024. Enterprise data store locally is relatively small.

5. According to IDC’s 2025 report, from 2018 to 2025, more than 22ZB of storage capacity will be required to meet storage needs. Approximately 59% of the capacity will come from the HDD hard drives. The share of storage on SSD hard disks including NVMe will increase, but it will not have much impact on the growth of HDD hard disk storage.

6. According to Domo’s data never sleeps 8.0 chart, global consumers spend US$1 million online every minute, make 1.4 million video and voice calls, share 150,000 messages on Facebook, and play 404,000 hours on Netflix video.

7. According to the Seagate Rethink data survey released by IDC in January 2020, there are more data created per hour today than in the entire year 20 years ago.

8. According to IDC, by 2021, public clouds will store more data than enterprise data centers. (This number is before COVID-19, which has accelerated the cloud migration plans of many organizations.)

9. AWS currently has 77 availability zones worldwide, and three availability zones are planned. This is likely that AWS now owns and operates 150 to 220 data centers worldwide (assuming an average of 2 to 3 data centers per availability zone). If each contains 50,000 to 80,000 servers, it means that AWS runs 7.5 million to 17.6 million servers.

10. Every connected person will have at least one data exchange every 18 seconds. Many of these interactions are due to billions of IoT devices connected globally, and 90ZB is expected to be created by 2025. In the next five years, about 1 billion people will start interacting with data every day.
